The View hosts took shots at former president Donald Trump for saying immigrants are trying to steal jobs at an event geared toward Black voters at a Black church on Saturday.
Trump appeared at 180 Church in Detroit for a roundtable discussion with Florida Republican Representative Byron Donalds and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.
“We’re going to seal the border and we’re going to stop the invasion of your jobs and the invasion of our country,” Trump said. “It’s an invasion of your jobs. They are taking away your jobs when they pour in.”
On Monday’s episode, host Ana Navarro said the comments were an attempt to turn Black voters against immigrants, especially Latin American immigrants.
“He’s trying to pit Black versus Brown, and we Black and Brown people need to stick together,” Navarro said. “Be very careful of anybody that wants to make us compete for the same small piece of pie. What they want is to keep us down, and we want strength. We need to be together, fight together for a bigger piece of pie, representation, equality and respect.”
The hosts also talked about how the church’s crowd appeared to be made up of mostly white voters.
“I’m not sure that most of these people even knew where that church was before they knew he was coming there,” host Whoopi Goldberg said.
Navarro was also disappointed by the lack of diversity in the crowd.
“That’s the worst part, right? That this is a Black church where there weren’t many Black people visible to the naked eye,” Navarro said.
Host Sunny Hostin said most Black voters will not be voting for Trump in the upcoming presidential election.
“This isn’t about Black voters choosing between Biden and Trump. This is about Black voters choosing between Biden and the couch,” Hostin said. “It’s not about Trump. Trump has no chance at getting a majority of Black voters. Eighty one percent of Black men are Democrats. Ninety seven percent of Black women are registered Democrats.”
Host Sara Haines agreed that Black voters are more likely to not vote at all than to vote for Trump.
“That’s the scarier part, because both candidates are losing to people that are not going to vote the other way no matter what,” Haines said.
Host Alyssa Farah Griffin said there was a small percentage of Black voters who voted for Trump in 2020, but his current campaign strategies will not help grow that number.
“This has been extrapolated in some Republican circles to say there’s a real opportunity to make inroads with those communities. Now Donald Trump and 50 Cent have interpreted that to mean, ‘Oh, they like me because of things like I’m a convicted felon and they think the criminal justice system is flawed.’ Aside from being offensive, they’re completely misreading the moment,” Griffin said.
