The bodies of a missing woman and a 4-year-old boy have been extracted from a submerged car in Eufaula, Alabama.
The vehicle was found 12 feet under the water by the Eufaula Police Department on Sunday.
The bodies are suspected to be two of the three people who were reported missing on June 1, but police are waiting on an autopsy to confirm. The search continues for the third young woman who went missing at the same time.
Eufaula is the largest city in Barbour County, Alabama, with a population of around 13,000 in 2010. Walter F. George Lake, known as Eufaula Lake by locals, is a popular location for boating and has a national reputation for bass fishing.
Police are still searching for another body in the case, and searched miles of shoreline on Sunday and Monday. However, the search has so far found nothing.
Chief Danny Christ of Eufaula Police told WDHN that the coroner and dive team had advised that because of the water temperature and time, if there was another body it would have been floating in the lake by now.
“With the amount of boat traffic there was this weekend, we feel that someone would have saw something,” he said.
Police are questioning several people to establish if the incident involved foul play.
Newsweek contacted the Eufaula Police Department via email for comment.
Police attended the scene at around 8:30 p.m. local time on Sunday after being alerted by a resident. They searched Walter F. George Lake waters around the Old Creek Town Park area.
A search and rescue team was called in from Houston County, including divers who were tasked with verifying and extracting the car.
The car was pulled from the water and taken in for evidence. The bodies were taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to be identified.
The identities of the missing women and child have not been released.
Many Eufaula residents expressed dismay and shock on social media at the incident.
Eufaula schoolteacher Taylor McCardle said: “What on Earth is going on in Eufaula?!?”
“What is happening to our little town?” said Sandi O’Dell on Facebook.
Other residents offered prayers for the deceased’s families.
“Praying for the family and justice to be served for the person or persons involved,” said Brandy Padgett.
Hubert Harrison praised the police chief for keeping local people informed: “We really appreciate your efforts.”
“The more info you can share with us will bring us closer together.”
