All good things must eventually come to an end, which is why Whoopi Goldberg left her seat on this morning’s episode of The View to cut off Jo Koy and end the interview.
The comedian appeared on the hit daytime talk show to promote his new Netflix standup special Live from Brooklyn. However, the co-hosts couldn’t let him leave without asking one question about the backlash he got for hosting the 2024 Golden Globes.
“Let’s shout out that I took that thing with 10 days!” he said. “Sara, let’s also state the fact that in 82 years that that thing was on, they never ever went to an Asian person. So the opportunity came, they asked everyone before me anyway and they all said no because they were like, ’10 days? No!’”
He continued, “And I was like, ‘Yeah,’ because if I don’t say yes now then it’ll be 82 years before I have this opportunity again. So I took it. Whatever.”
Goldberg, who publicly supported Koy following his awkward performance, chimed in to once again defend him from the trolls.
“It’s a tough gig. All those gigs are tough and people don’t know until they do them. I always say, unless you can do this, shut up about it,” she said, adding, “Go see Jo in the arena. Then you see what you missed. You got the clean version of what you had to get. Go see him in the arena and then talk about what he does.”
A beaming Koy then gushed over how much Goldberg influenced his career.
“I love every bit of you. Every single bit of you. I say this all the time and people think I’m kissing her butt,” he said shortly before producers began to play him off. “It’s like, you are the reason I sat there in my room rewinding, rewinding, because before there was the internet, before there was anything, I could rewind a tape and watch Whoopi.”
Despite the music starting halfway through his response, Koy kept praising Goldberg, prompting the EGOT recipient to leave her seat and whisper, “I have to go,” in his ear.
“Oh, you do?” he asked, to which she replied, “I do. I have to tell you that you can stream his new special Live from Brooklyn on Netflix and we’ll be right back.”
Goldberg wrapped her arms around Koy and kissed him on the cheek as The View finally went to the commercial break.
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
