Daniel Craig’s famed Southern detective Benoit Blanc has a new look in a first look still from Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, unveiled on Monday morning, which you can view below.
Depicting Craig with long hair, the black-and-white still was shared by filmmaker Rian Johnson to commemorate the start of production on the anticipated Netflix threequel.
“Aaaaand we’re off!” wrote Johnson in a message posted to X. “Today is day 1 of shooting on the next Benoit Blanc mystery “Wake Up Dead Man” – see you on the other side.”
A contemporary revival of the murder mystery genre, the Knives Out franchise centers on the investigations of Craig’s character, Blanc. While the plot for Wake Up Dead Man remains under wraps, Craig leads an ensemble that also includes Josh O’Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Jeremy Renner, Mila Kunis, Daryl McCormack and Josh Brolin, as previously announced.
The franchise launched with Johnson’s 2019 whodunit Knives Out, starring Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer and more, which grossed over $310 million worldwide. Following the popularity of the first film, which landed an Oscar nomination for Original Screenplay, Netflix acquired the rights to produce two sequels for $450 million — the first of which, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, was released in 2022. The first follow-up film was also recognized at the Oscars for its screenplay, but this time, with a nomination in the Adapted category.
Johnson is directing Wake Up Dead Man from his own script, also producing alongside partner Ram Bergman for T-Street. View his post on X below.
