Hey! I’ve seen that T-shirt before! On June 6, Jennifer Lawrence was photographed in New York City wearing the iconic Loewe “I Told Ya” T-shirt ($330), made famous by Zendaya and Josh O’Connor, who both wore the tee in the movie Challengers.
The shirt itself is inspired by another American icon, John F. Kennedy Jr., who was photographed wearing a version of the slogan tee back in the ’90s. Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson, who also served as the costume designer on Challengers, told WWD of his muse, “When JFK Jr. was younger, in the ‘80s and ‘90s, there was kind of an effortlessness to his wardrobe—like he could wear anything, and sex appeal would always be there.”
Lawrence dressed the statement tee up a bit for an outing on June 6, pairing the gray shirt with with pleated black trousers and a black Dior handbag slung over her shoulder. To complete the look, she added tortoise shell sunglasses and flat leather sandals. The outfit is effortless, luxe, and so Jennifer Lawrence.
Tell me if I’m reading too much into this but…is JLaw possibly trying to send some kind of message (aside from the obvious one) with this top? Challengers was directed by Luca Guadagnino, who is also directing Lawrence in an upcoming film called Burial Rites, per Screen Rant. After the tee went semi-viral, O’Connor told Rolling Stone, “It’s such a cheeky T-shirt. Just so cheeky, and I really liked wearing it.”
Maybe Lawrence is trying to shout out Guadagnino. Or maybe I’m just wearing my tin foil hat a little too tight.
