What Trump’s Speech Could Mean For Future Elections

Editor’s Note: Washington Week With The Atlantic is a partnership between NewsHour Productions, WETA, and The Atlantic airing every Friday on PBS stations nationwide. Check your local listings, watch full episodes here, or listen to the weekly podcast here.

President Trump’s obsession with alleged election corruption featured heavily in his latest speech to the nation. On Washington Week With The Atlantic, panelists joined to discuss the president’s remarks, and more.

During his address, Trump claimed that American elections are in danger of being influenced by forces abroad—but the president has yet to produce any evidence supporting this, Anne Applebaum, a staff writer at The Atlantic, said last night. What’s more, the United States has a “series of institutions that have been created going back decades, actually, that are designed to prevent foreign interference and other interference,” she continued. But “the Trump administration has pretty systematically dismantled them.”

Joining the editor in chief of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, to discuss this and more: Applebaum; Laura Barrón-López, a White House correspondent for MS NOW; Stephen Hayes, the editor of The Dispatch; Carl Hulse, a chief Washington correspondent at The New York Times.
