The iPhone 15 lineup dominated the first quarter of 2024 smartphone sales. According to a Counterpoint Research study, Apple’s latest releases are the best-selling smartphones of early 2024, following a similar pattern with the previous iPhone iteration in Q1 2023.
What makes this report so exciting for Cupertino is that demand for the iPhone 15 Pro Max didn’t drop, and this was the first non-seasonal quarter where this phone category took the top spot. Comparatively, in 2023, it was the iPhone 14. This shows that users are focusing on high-end smartphones since seven of the top 10 devices on this list have a price point of $600 or more.
Counterpoint research shows that Apple’s strategy of focusing on more features in the Pro lineup has caught up, as it captured half of Apple’s total sales in Q1 2024, a significant increase from 24% in Q1 2020, which contributed over 60% of it sales value in this quarter.
On the other hand, interest in the iPhone Plus has dropped, as it gets the eighth position, while the iPhone 14 Plus was in the seventh position a year before. In total, Apple’s latest iPhone models secured five spots for best smartphone sales, while Samsung had the other half.

According to the study, consumers were driven to buy iPhone Pro models thanks to its “innovative, dynamic island interface, more advanced chipset, ultra-smooth displays, titanium chassis, and a telephoto camera.”
Counterpoint also praises the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, which secured two spots thanks to its “early refresh of the series, and its efforts in generative AI technology,” as it was “the first to reach the market with GenAI features and capabilities, allowing users to create unique content and experience a new level of interaction with their smartphones.”
With consumers taking longer to upgrade to newer devices, Counterpoint expects that, in the future, the top 10 best-selling smartphones will capture a larger share of total smartphone sales as OEMs focus on leaner portfolios with premium features, including GenAI.
