Netflix has unveiled nine new movies and series from Poland including the directorial debut of High Water writer Kasper Bajon and a thriller from the team behind Forgotten Love.
As the streamer continues to unveil international originals by the bucket load, Project UFO leads the Poland slate, a mini-series helmed by Bajon that will transport fans of stories inspired by real events to the 1980s in order to investigate the alleged UFO landing in a remote countryside village.
Bajon wrote the popular High Water series, one of the biggest to come from Netflix Poland, about the 1997 Central European flood and how it was managed by the authorities of the Polish city of Wrocław.
Meanwhile, Michał Gazda (director) and Magdalena Szwedkowicz (producer), the team behind last year’s Netflix Poland movie Forgotten Love, are re-teaming on a movie following a retired policeman trying to bring to justice to those behind a ruthless bank robbery case, titled Napad.
Boxer, directed by Mitja Okorn and produced by Maciej Kawulski, most recently known for his work on How I Fell in Love with a Gangster, is set in communist Poland and follows the journey of the main character Jędrek both in the boxing ring and on his way to England, where he hopes to make his dreams come true.
Elsewhere, Go Ahead, Brother from writer Kacper Wysocki, responsible for the script of Feedback, a 2023 series, will take an insider’s look into the quest by a former elite police unit officer to solve his financial worries.
Rounding out the slate, Netflix has also commissioned Klara Kochańska-Bajon to co-direct a series titled Mothers of Penguins, Jan Peszek and Maciej Stuhr will star in a movie about a family’s fight over their eccentric uncle’s fortune and Maja Ostaszewska (Broad Peak) will star opposite Jakub Gierszał, who is also making his Netflix debut, in Colors of Evil: Red, a movie adaptation of a popular novel. Magdalena Popławska (Glitter) will return to Netflix screens in Divorce, where a formerly married couple decides to have their church wedding annulled, not without obstacles on their way, and Netflix has greenlit a second season of comedy series Green Glove Gang.
“We are excited to work again with a range of extremely talented local creators – who bring to Netflix their diverse stories, appreciated by viewers in Poland for their quality and distinctive characters,” said Michael Azzolino, Netflix’s VP of Content for Central and Eastern Europe, Benelux and Turkey.
“Fans will be excited to see the creators of such Netflix hits as High Water, Forgotten Love or How I Fell in Love with a Gangster returning to Netflix to test their unique skills in new genres or creative challenges that they haven’t had the opportunity to explore before. We also have a few surprises from emerging Polish talents that will give audiences a chance to experience fresh perspectives on local stories.”
Netflix has unveiled dozens of new international shows and movies since the turn of the year, defying streaming rivals, who have in the main rowed back from international. Last week, UK boss Anne Mensah said she will not change commissioning course despite a shift of focus to profit over subs numbers.
Netflix opened a CEE office in Warsaw a couple of years ago, although CEE originals chief Anna Nagler quietly exited a few months back.
