Chris Pine is saying goodbye to his clean-cut looks — and hello to a scruffy, Poolman summer.
The actor looked nearly unrecognizable — and clearly inspired by his character in the film — at the Los Angeles premiere of Poolman on Wednesday, April 24.
Pine, who both directed and starred in the mystery-comedy, arrived at the premiere in an “Awesome Aquatics” blue minivan. He stepped out of the car in a lemon-colored “I [heart] LA” tee underneath a tan blazer, which he paired with a giant flower on the lapel. The Don’t Worry Darling star — who sported a gray beard and wore his long, blond hair unkempt — also donned a pair of cadet blue shorts and neon orange sunglasses.
While his latest red carpet fit (and overall look) is undoubtedly a departure from his typical, all-American vibe, Pine’s sartorial choices on Wednesday were certainly indicative of his Poolman character, Darren Barrenman.
Per IMDb’s synopsis of the movie — which also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Annette Bening, Danny DeVito and more — Pine’s character “is an unwavering optimist and native Angeleno who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block and fighting to make his hometown a better place to live.”
Things get murky, however, “when he is tasked by a femme fatale to uncover the truth behind a shady business deal, Darren enlists the help of friends to take on a corrupt politician and a greedy land developer.” Ultimately, Darren’s “investigation reveals a hidden truth about his beloved city and himself.”
Though he may have been inspired by his character for the Poolman premiere, this isn’t the first time Pine has rocked a different look on the red carpet.
In 2022, he surprised fans by showing up at the All the Old Knives premiere with the same long, scruffy beard and shaggy-haired look. At the time, he called the vibe “equal parts laziness and equal parts something I may do in the future here,” seemingly teasing his role in Poolman.
