EXCLUSIVE: Silverton Siege director Mandla Dube has landed major investment for his next six feature films.
The Industrial Corporation of South Africa (IDC), a national development finance institution, has committed to financing a slate of films from Dube’s Pambili Media.
Dube is best known for Netflix action thriller Silverton Siege, which was inspired by the real-life incident that sparked the Free Mandela movement, and Heart of the Hunter, a title based on Deon Meyer’s best-selling novel that was the first African feature to debut at number one on Netflix’s global charts.
He also made South African liberation film Kalushi and street dancer drama series Jiva, both of which were for Netflix. In 2022, he struck a multi-title development deal with the streamer, as Netflix made a major commitment to production in the country.
Pambili Media, which former music video producer and cinematographer Dube founded several years back, has a slate of projects in genres such as sci-fi and fantasy, period drama and contemporary.
“We are so grateful for the support of the IDC,” said Dube. “This marks an important moment in the history of South Africa as we make this powerful move to elevate our creative vision on the world stage.
“This finance substantially enhances the caliber of our productions, broadens our reach into untapped markets, and genres. We anticipate not only commercial success but also a larger cultural effect via our narratives with this investment.”
The IDC focuses on investments in companies and initiatives that contribute to the generation of balanced, sustainable economic growth in Africa, and can empower the South African population. South Africa remains the powerhouse production hub of Africa, along with Nigeria’s Nollywood, and offers a sizeable filming rebate incentive.
“We are dedicated to empowering South African filmmakers, not only by enabling them to produce compelling content but also by assisting them in showcasing their work to global audiences and promoting South Africa as a premiere filming location,” said Kagisho Bapela, TV and film sector lead for the IDC.
Dube and Pambili Media are represented by Alta Global Media.
