Unsurprisingly, the release of Taylor Swift’s 11th album has seen fans rushing to marry the star’s provocative lyrics with the correct ex-boyfriend.
While several of the songs on The Tortured Poets Department are reported to be about her split from British actor Joe Alwyn, with whom she was in a relationship for six years, fans are sure a couple of the tracks with the most contemptuous lyrics have been inspired with her briefer relationship with British pop star Matt Healy, frontman for the group The 1975.
The couple were together for a couple of months in spring 2023, and fans are convinced the song The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived is about that period.
Lyrics include a reference to a man in his “Jehovah’s Witness suit… who the f*** was that guy?”
And she added: “You tried to buy some pills from a friend of friends of mine. They just ghosted you… Now you know what it feels like…”
The Sun newspaper quotes Healy’s aunt in response to the track being released. Debbie Dedes said of her nephew: “Nothing surprises him anymore. He will not be surprised by the song. Him and her know what went on.”
The newspaper adds that Dedes also told the Daily Mail: “She writes about all her relationships, doesn’t she? I don’t think it will come as a shock to him at all.
“He’s very happy in his new relationship so I’m sure he will be focusing on that.”
Other songs include So Long, London, which seem to point to Swift’s return to the US after living in the UK city with Alwyn during their time together. Alwyn, who was always discreet during the couple’s time together, has unsurprisingly yet to comment on any of the lyrics reportedly all about him.
Swift’s current beau, NFL star Travis Kelce, has seemingly inspired a more favourable ode. Fans are convinced the song The Alchemy is about him and his recent victory at the Superbowl, with lyrics including: “Chiefs chanting ’cause they said. There was no chance. Trying to be the greatest in the league. Where’s the trophy? He just comes running over to me.”
