“Country artist Morgan Wallen, 30, was booked early today on 3 cts of felony reckless endangerment and 1 ct of misdemeanor disorderly conduct for throwing a chair from the rooftop of Chief’s Bar Sun night,” the police shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday. “The chair landed on Broadway, close to 2 MNPD officers. His bond: $15,250.”
Chief’s, in downtown Nashville, is a bar, restaurant, and venue recently opened by Wallen’s friend and fellow country music artist Eric Church. According to The Tennesseean, a police report says that just before 11 p.m. Sunday evening, footage shows Wallen “lunging and throwing an object over the roof.” Witnesses also told the paper that they saw the musician laughing afterward. According to The Wrap, police said that Wallen threw the chair for “no legitimate purpose.”
Wallen’s attorney, Worrick Robinson, shared a statement with Vanity Fair via email.
“At 10:53p Sunday evening Morgan Wallen was arrested in downtown Nashville for reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct,” he wrote. “He is cooperating fully with authorities.”
No injuries were reported in the incident, and Wallen can be seen smiling in a mugshot shared on social media by Nashville police.
Wallen reportedly paid the bond and was released from custody around 3:30 a.m. Monday morning. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 3, which coincides with his planned three-night run of concerts at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium from May 2 to May 4.
Wallen, too, has announced plans to open his own bar in the area, a six-story establishment called This Bar. The name is a reference to one of Wallen’s songs.
This isn’t the singer’s first brush with the law in the area. In May 2020, Wallen was reportedly arrested outside of a bar owned by Kid Rock in the same neighborhood and charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct but was not prosecuted. Afterward, he made a public apology and praised local law enforcement.
He’s also had several controversial moments in past years, such as being disinvited from performing on Saturday Night Live in 2020 after partying maskless in a breach of COVID-19 protocols. In early 2021, Wallen was caught using a racial slur on video. He apologized, but faced backlash from fans and was dropped from several radio stations, among other consequences.
Just last week, on Thursday, Wallen kicked off his One Night at a Time Tour, playing two shows in Indianapolis before apparently returning to Nashville for the weekend. It is unclear as of yet whether this brush with the law will impact upcoming dates.
