Andy Cohen is the latest celebrity to apologize for jokes he made at Kate Middleton’s expense. The Bravo personality has issued an apology for contributing to conspiracy theories about Princess Kate’s whereabouts, before she revealed her cancer diagnosis: “I am heartbroken by the news about Princess Kate.”
Weeks ago, amid intense internet speculation regarding Princess Kate’s whereabouts, Cohen commented on a viral video that allegedly showed the Princess out on a walk with her husband, Prince William. “That ain’t Kate,” posted Cohen on X, in response to the video, to his 2.4 million followers. His comment went viral and added fuel to the fire surrounding the “where’s Kate?” discourse, which ballooned after the princess issued an apology for digitally altering a photo a family photo released on U.K.’s Mother’s Day. Cohen also took a screenshot from the video and posted it on his Instagram story, asking “Is this Princess Kate?” to his 5.5 million Instagram followers.
Cohen delivered his apology on his first SiriusXM Radio Andy show since Middleton announced her cancer diagnosis. “I just want to say, I am heartbroken by the news about Princess Kate,” he said. “I think someone on Sky News called me a ‘numpty’ during that whole conversation, and they were right.”
Cohen is not the only celebrity to issue an apology to the royal family. Late Show host Stephen Colbert has also apologized for jokes he made during Princess Kate’s absence from the public eye. Colbert’s jokes insinuated that William was having an affair with noblewoman Lady Rose Hanbury, and led to Hanbury issuing a legal notice to CBS and saying that the allegations are false. “Though I’m sure they don’t need it from me, I and everyone here at The Late Show would like to extend our well-wishes and heartfelt hope that her recovery is swift and thorough,” said Colbert on air. Blake Lively has also issued an apology for jokes she made at Kate’s expense on social media, saying that she was “mortified” by her “silly post” that she made at the Duchess of Windsor’s expense.
Cohen continued his apology, expressing regret at ever weighing into the public discourse surrounding Princess Kate and sent well wishes to King Charles, who revealed his own cancer diagnosis last year. “I wish I had kept my mouth shut,” said Cohen. “We are all praying for Princess Kate and King Charles.”
