Paul Pelosi should lose his license — for public safety, and his own

Paul Pelosi’s latest misadventure involves an alleged hit-and-run. But it’s not his first automotive disaster — and it provokes the question: Will he be held accountable this time?

Mr. Pelosi allegedly crashed his brown convertible into a parked Tesla in Yountville, California, before driving away.

The husband of the former Speaker of the House should face a full investigation, and the full force of the law, if warranted. He should not be treated any differently than an ordinary person, and he should know that he will be closely watched.

As The California Post recalled this weekend, Mr. Pelosi pleaded guilty to driving under the influence after a crash in Napa County in 2022. He was sentenced to a fine and spent five days in jail.

He has had a variety of other driving infractions. When he was a teenager, he flipped his sports car in a crash that killed his brother. He was not prosecuted then.

But an apparent hit-and-run after a DUI warrants a criminal investigation.

It also suggests a contempt for the law that has become familiar behavior from the Pelosis.

Recall that during the pandemic, when Gov. Gavin Newsom shut down most of the small businesses in the state, including beauty salons, Nancy Pelosi was caught visiting her hairdresser, and without wearing a mask.

When news broke of her violation of the coronavirus lockdowns, Mrs. Pelosi refused to apologize for flouting the quarantine rules. Instead, she audaciously blamed the owner of the salon, and claimed to be the victim of a setup.

The former Speaker has also resisted efforts to clamp down on stock trading by federal officials who may have access to non-public information about companies.

Apparently, she and her husband believe that rules should not apply to them.

After a hit-and-run crash, an ordinary person could expect to be prosecuted and likely lose his or her license, or even face significant jail time — especially for a second offense.

Mr. Pelosi should not be judged by a special stanadrd.

He has alternatives. He and his wife have a net worth of a quarter of a billion dollars. They can easily afford a driver.

And “no one is above the law,” as Nancy Pelosi says — at when she’s attacking Donald Trump.

Paul Pelosi’s driving mishap also suggests he is not taking precautions for his personal safety.

When he was viciously attacked in a shocking home invasion in 2022, many people — while sympathizing with him, as the victim of a brutal assault — also wondered why the Pelosis didn’t have better security.

Mr. Pelosi should lose his license — for public safety, and for his own.
