‘Mortal Kombat II’ takes out box office competition on its first day in theaters

“Mortal Kombat II” fought its way to the top of the box office on its opening day.

The fantasy film, a sequel to the 2021 original, raked in $17 million Friday, according to Box Office Mojo.

The Post called the film — the fourth installment in the franchise based on the popular video game — “an onscreen bucket of slop” and “a migraine of nonstop fights and idiot characters.”

However, it still managed to step right over “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” which moved down a notch to second, with $9.8 million in sales on its second Friday in theaters.

The sequel to the 2006 comedy — in which stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt all reportedly earned $12.5 million to reprise their roles — enjoyed the third-best domestic debut of the year.

In third was the Michael Jackson biopic, “Michael,” which earned $8.8 million on its third Friday in theaters.

The film has made history as the second music biopic to surpass the $500 million mark globally after “Bohemian Rhapsody,” based on the life of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, as per Screen Rant.

“Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live in 3D,” a concert film featuring performances from the singer’s 2025 tour, took fourth with a $4.5 million haul.

Eilish revealed that the idea for the concert film came from its co-director James Cameron, who “wrote an email to my mom because his wife is friends with my mom, or they had worked together,” she told People.

“He literally had the full idea already. He was like, ‘Why hasn’t anybody filmed Billie’s concert in 3D? Can we? Can I?’”

In fifth place was “The Sheep Detectives,” which took home just over $4 million in revenue.

The Post praised the film, starring Hugh Jackman, as a “cute animal mystery movie.”
