‘Comey’s lawyers must have loved’ Todd Blanche’s interview confession: ex-prosecutor

Comments made by acting Attorney General Todd Blanche during two Sunday cable show interviews with regard to the prosecution of former James Comey likely delighted the former FBI director’s lawyers.

That is the opinion of former state attorney of Palm Beach County, Florida, Dave Aronberg, who was amused on “Morning Joe” that Blanche put himself in the position of having to awkwardly explain the reasoning for going after Comey one year after he posted a picture of seashells spelling out “8 6 4 7,” which the DOJ insists was a threat against Donald Trump.

Speaking with NBC’s Kristen Welker on Sunday, Blanche complained, “You prove intent like you always prove intent. You prove intent with witnesses, you prove intent with documents, with materials. So again, this is not just about a single Instagram post. This is about a body of evidence that the grand jury collected over the series of about 11 months. That evidence was presented to the grand jury. And it’s not the government. It’s not the Department of Justice. It’s not Todd Blanche that returns an indictment against James Comey. It’s the grand jury.”

After watching the clip with MS NOW regular Katty Kay, the bemused Aronberg pointed out that Blanche also admitted that others who have used the offensive numbers won’t be prosecuted.

“You know, Comey’s defense lawyers must have loved that interview because it strengthens their imminent motion to dismiss, based on selective prosecution and vindictive prosecution,” he began. “So, Todd Blanche admitted that there are many people who are doing the same thing as Comey, but they won’t be prosecuted. And he said the difference is an 11-month investigation into Comey that turned up evidence of intent, because you need some subjective intent to try to kill the president. And yet he won’t provide any evidence that they supposedly uncovered in those 11 months, which means they don’t have evidence that Comey wanted to kill the president. If they had it, they’d be shouting it from the rooftops.”

“So you can see in one case they’ve got evidence and the other case they do not — that’s the difference,” he added before asking, “So what changed in those 11 months? I’m not so sure. There was a meticulous investigation. I think the difference is that in those 11 months, Pam Bondi was fired because she did not convict any of Trump’s enemies, including James Comey. And now Todd Blanche is auditioning for that job.”

“It’s not that tough to connect the dots, you know, Comey’s defense lawyers certainly will,” he predicted.
