A 111-year-old man who is believed to be the oldest man in the United States revealed his three secrets to living a long life.
Luis Cano was born in Colombia on Dec. 9, 1914, but now resides in Linden, New Jersey, and loves fishing Fox 5 reported.
He was certified as the 112th-oldest person in the world by LongeviQuest, an organization that tracks the oldest living people.
Cano served in the Colombian Army and later started a bus company that transported people through rural areas.
When asked by Fox 5 News how he feels about the achievement, he reportedly replied: “Good.”
He married Alicia Angelo Cano in 1948, and the two went on to have ten children. Cano now has five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
The couple moved to Far Rockaway, New York in the 1990’s and Cano moved to Linden after his wife died in 2004. He currently lives with two of his children.
He said the secrets to living a long life are to “Don’t drink a lot. Get good sleep and don’t smoke.”
He also said that the key to living a good life is to “behave well.”
He spends most of his time at home looking out the window and thinking about his life, and likes watching airplanes pass overhead. Aeronautics has been a lifelong interest of Cano’s.
Cano proudly keeps a plaque from LongeviQuest commemorating his many years on earth at home, and said that family and work were the main focus of his life.
The centi-genarian never received a formal education.
Earlier this year, New York’s oldest resident died at 113 years old.
Louise Jean Signore passed away in January and friend described her as “feisty” until the end.
“She lived a good life, she had a fantastic life. She was a happy person. She never talked about having any regrets,” longtime friend Frances Perkins said.
