“I always like to accessorize,” Jean-Pierre Alvarez, 30, said about his favorite part of getting dressed. “You can create something very special.”
On the Thursday in April when we met in Manhattan, he was sporting accessories that included several rings, a patterned scarf, bracelets and an understated Chanel watch. It was an eclectic mix that stood out but didn’t scream for attention.
Our paths crossed just after he had clocked out of his retail job in fashion, an industry in which he has worked for about seven years, he said. When I asked if there was a theme to his outfit, he described it as “a little bit cowboy” and explained that his leathery caramel jacket, from the designer Willy Chavarria’s line for Zara, was the centerpiece of the look.
Moccasins might have matched the jacket better than the sneakers he was wearing, he said. But he was running late to work that morning, “so that’s why I didn’t pick the right shoes.”
