The ‘Summer House’ Scandal, Explained

Almost exactly three years after the Scandoval heard around the world, another relationship scandal has hit the Bravo TV universe, reverberating across social media and drawing impassioned reactions from barre instructors, clueless husbands and even the “Mad Men” and “Your Friends & Neighbors” star Jon Hamm.

The drama stems from a popular unscripted Bravo series called “Summer House,” now in its 10th season, which follows the lives of a group of New York media workers, influencers and entrepreneurs who share a house in the Hamptons each summer. Here’s what you need to know.

Who are the players here?

Since Season 2, Kyle Cooke and Amanda Batula have reigned as the show’s king and queen. They have dated, gotten engaged and married in front of cameras. Their at times turbulent relationship served as fodder for endless TV drama. Much of the season currently airing, which was filmed last summer, focuses on the marital tensions that preceded their separation, which was announced in January.

Ciara Miller, a model and registered nurse, joined the show for Season 5, which aired in 2021, and quickly became close with the cast, and especially the female cast members, including Ms. Batula.

When West Wilson, a sports journalist, joined the show’s eighth season, filmed in 2023 and aired in early 2024, he began flirting with and eventually dating Ms. Miller.

The end of their relationship was announced in June 2024, when the two revealed on the “Summer House” Season 8 reunion that Mr. Wilson had told her he wasn’t ready to commit to a monogamous relationship.

After a debut performance that made Mr. Wilson a fan favorite — and for which he was profiled by this newspaper — that turn of events caused a swift wave of fan backlash against him (and another story by this paper). Both stories became discussion points in Season 9, with Ms. Miller taking issue with how much he was talking about their relationship in the media.

In this season, Mr. Wilson’s story line has primarily revolved around making amends with Ms. Miller, who has opened up on the show and in interviews about the racist abuse she suffered online in the aftermath of their breakup. The deepening friendship between Ms. Batula and Ms. Miller has also been a focal point this season.

OK, so what happened?

Chances at a reconciliation between Mr. Wilson and Ms. Miller seemed to implode last month when rumors began swirling that Ms. Batula and Mr. Wilson were seen flirting and holding hands at an event. A few weeks later, Page Six reported that Ms. Batula and Ms. Miller were “feuding” amid the rumors.

Though Mr. Wilson initially pushed back on rumors that he was dating Ms. Batula during a March 24 appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live,” the two shocked the Bravoverse on March 31 by reversing course and releasing a joint statement on their Instagram Stories confirming that they were exploring a “connection.”

“We’ve seen the growing online speculation, so while this is still very new, we wanted to provide some clarity,” the statement began.

It continued: “We’ve shown up for each other as friends over the years, through all the highs and lows, and what’s developed recently was the last thing either of us expected. Our connection grew out of a genuine, longstanding friendship, which made it especially important for us to approach this with care.”

Have Ms. Miller or Mr. Cooke responded?

Neither Ms. Miller nor Mr. Cooke have posted a definitive response, but an interview recorded on the street with Mr. Cooke was published on Wednesday. “I’m really worried about Amanda, if I’m being honest,” he said.

On Monday night, Ms. Miller served as red carpet host at the Season 2 premiere of the Apple TV+ show “Your Friends & Neighbors,” and she seemed to address the rumors when she told Mr. Hamm that she had “been better.” She was also photographed sitting on a sidewalk in New York City shortly before the statement was posted, speaking with someone not on the show.

What has been the reaction to the news?

Public condemnation of Mr. Wilson and Ms. Batula was swift and expansive, with many people declaring themselves #TeamCiara and others posting harsh comments on the Instagram accounts for both Mr. Wilson and Ms. Batula.

Much as with Scandoval — the scandal that erupted in March 2023 with the news that the “Vanderpump Rules” star Tom Sandoval was cheating on his longtime girlfriend (and co-star) Ariana Madix with a fellow castmate, Raquel Leviss — this news has transcended the immediate Bravoverse, trending on Google and Twitter and activating group chats across the country.

Many of Ms. Miller’s fellow Bravo stars, including her “Summer House” co-stars Lindsay Hubbard, KJ Dillard and Mia Calabrese, also posted on Instagram to express their support for her.

Paige DeSorbo, a former cast member and close friend of both women, has not posted directly, but a post on her cat Daphne’s account showed three cats in a bed and a swimsuit in a trash can, along with the caption “Karma is a cat.”

Is there any chance this is an April Fools’ Day joke?

There has been some speculation that this has all been an elaborate April Fools’ Day joke by a cast known for its closeness and general hilarity, but given how long the rumors have been circulating — and the official statement from Mr. Wilson and Ms. Batula — that seems unlikely.

What’s next?

On Tuesday night, the Bravo executive producer and “Watch What Happens Live” host Andy Cohen posted on X that his team was preparing for the “Summer House” reunion and solicited questions from his followers. The reunion, which is sure to be a blockbuster, will air after the show’s expected season finale in late April or early May.

It’s unclear whether cameras will pick back up to capture the immediate fallout of the announcement, though sources have told other outlets that they will not, and that the drama will instead be addressed at the reunion.

Bravo declined to comment for this story. Mr. Wilson and publicists for the other individuals did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
