‘Should scare all of us’: Bogus tip that hit Buttigieg’s twins rattles expert

A leading child welfare law expert says the investigation that led Michigan authorities to briefly separate former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg from his 4-year-old twins was built on shaky ground from the start — and reveals deeper cracks in how child abuse tips are handled across state lines.

Newly obtained police records show the case began with a vague, unverified tip relayed from Indiana to Michigan, with no name or contact information for the caller, the Washington Post reported.

Michigan troopers and a child welfare official showed up at Buttigieg’s home within a day of the tip’s arrival, telling him he could not be alone with his children until they were separately interviewed the following day. The twins stayed with grandparents overnight while Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten, waited to learn what they’d even been accused of doing.

Vivek Sankaran, a University of Michigan law professor and child advocacy expert who reviewed the documents, said the decision to approach Buttigieg’s door on such thin, unverified information was a serious lapse in judgment, especially given no evidence suggested the children were in immediate danger. He said the case should serve as a wake-up call about how easily families can be upended by inadequately vetted reports.

“At the very least, it’s incredibly poor investigative work – I would even say reckless, in light of how harmful this is for the family,” Sankaran said.

“It should scare all of us,” he added.

The records show the tip took nearly a week to unravel. Indiana officials only later told Michigan that the likely source was a woman authorities described as possibly “mentally unstable.” By then, Buttigieg had already gone public with the ordeal, and Michigan State Police had publicly declared the allegation false.

The Post independently identified and spoke with the apparent caller, an Alabama woman with past ties to Indiana. She could not answer basic questions about her own allegations, declined to provide any corroborating details, and instead accused the reporter of colluding with Buttigieg. Social media posts show she had urged people not to vote for him weeks before contacting authorities.

Michigan State Police defended their handling of the case, saying the investigation moved quickly and prioritized the children’s safety. The Michigan attorney general’s office has since opened its own review, citing concerns that false child-abuse allegations could become a new tool for harassing public officials.

Other experts echoed Sankaran’s concerns about accountability gaps between agencies.

Dale Margolin Cecka of Albany Law School said the case shows what happens when no single authority is responsible for verifying a claim before it upends a family’s life.

For Buttigieg, one of the most prominent LGBTQ political figures in the country and a likely future presidential candidate, the episode has left lasting unease — not just about his own family, but about how vulnerable any public figure’s children could be to an unfounded claim.
