Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (New York), the top House Democrat, said Sunday he was a “hard yes” on impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and said he would discuss the issue with other lawmakers in his party when they reconvene in Washington on Tuesday.
The effort to impeach Hegseth is being led by outgoing Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky), who said he plans to introduce a resolution as early as Monday calling for an impeachment vote.
Asked on ABC’s “This Week” about the Massie resolution, Jeffries, currently the House minority leader, replied: “I’m a hard yes.”
“The so-called secretary of defense has abused his power, undermined our national security and engineered this reckless and costly war of choice in Iran, which has skyrocketed prices on the American people and made the country less safe,” Jeffries said. “Pete Hegseth has got to go.”
Jeffries, who is likely to become the nation’s first Black speaker, spoke as Democrats are poised to take over both the House and Senate in January after they scored huge victoriesup and down the ballot in last Tuesday’s midterm elections, during which voters delivered a stunning rebuke of President Donald Trump’s leadership.
Hegseth has denounced Massie’s resolution as a “sham.”
