U.S. Secret Service arrested a man near the White House on Thursday night for allegedly making a threat against the president’s life and being in possession of multiple firearms and rounds of ammunition, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Ronny Yordrix Guanipa Chrinos was parked in a vehicle on Constitution Avenue when officers approached him for “acting suspicious,” a news release from the department said.
“When they confronted the suspect, he said that he heard voices in his head telling him to come to Washington, D.C. and kill President Trump,” the statement said.
The vehicle had been reported stolen, according to the statement, and Chrinos told the officers there were weapons inside.
Authorities found an AR-15-style weapon, two pistols and dozens of rounds of ammunition, the statement said.
Chrinos faces multiple firearms charges, including counts for possession and carrying a pistol without a license. He was also charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, theft and receiving stolen property.
“This is the latest example of Secret Service personnel relying on extensive training and experience to deescalate a volatile situation that posed an imminent threat to our protectees and other Americans,” U.S. Secret Service Director Sean Curran said in the statement.
According to DHS, Chrinos is from Venezuela and unlawfully entered the U.S. in 2014 through Texas. He was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol but was later released. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer or request for Chrinos to be held past his release date to allow for his deportation.
