Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) described the Republicans’ historic losses in the midterm elections Tuesday as “an ass-kicking.”
“2026 was not simply a blue wave. It was a blue tsunami,” Cruz said on his podcast.
The result was a “Watergate-level repudiation,” he added, referring to the 1974 election, when Americans punished Republicans for the Watergate scandal that led to President Richard M. Nixon’s resignation.
Cruz, who was not up for reelection this year, blamed Tuesday’s losses on Republicans that “seem like they didn’t understand or they didn’t care” about issues frustrating voters, such as the cost of living.
“Tariffs have made everything too expensive. And the Iran war has dragged on too long,” Cruz said.
He was speaking after Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race. Talarico will be the first Democratic senator in Texas in more than 30 years.
“Texas is blue. That is a hard sentence to utter,” Cruz said, adding that he would work with the Democrats “when they’re willing to be reasonable.”
He said he called Talarico to congratulate him. “It was a pleasant conversation … I told him that I looked forward to working with him to try to benefit Texas.”
