Sen. Mark Warner (D-Virginia) is seeking a fourth term against Republican Bert Mizusawa, a retired Army major general who has never sought elective office.
Warner, a former Virginia governor, has far outraised Mizusawa, who did not receive help from national Republican groups.
What’s at stake
Most political analysts regard Warner, vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, as a shoo-in for reelection. Mizusawa emphasized his military background while campaigning in the military-heavy state.
Virginia used to be a battleground for Senate races (including in 2014 when Warner nearly lost), but it has fallen off the map as it drifted blue and its voters reliably backed Democrats
Democrats can’t afford any losses by heavily favored incumbents such as Warner to have any hope of gaining a majority in the Senate.
