Democrats across the country celebrated a night of decisive victories, including several stunning wins in Republican strongholds like Texas and Kansas, which flipped control of both chambers of Congress and dealt a heavy blow to President Trump.
James Talarico became the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Texas since 1988, and, in a tectonic upset, Gina Hinojosa defeated Greg Abbott in the governor’s race. In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman to be elected governor of a U.S. state. And, for the first time since 1932, voters in Kansas elected a Democrat to the Senate.
Times photographers were on the scene at election-night parties from Bangor, Maine, to Sacramento, as candidates and supporters reacted to the results.
