What to watch
- The Supreme Court of Virginia earlier this year invalidated a voter-approved referendum that would have allowed redistricting favoring Democrats, but Democrats are still banking on being able to flip at least two House seats. The 1st and 2nd congressional districts are among the most competitive races in the country and central in the battle for control of the House.
- If a third seat — central Virginia’s heavily red 5th Congressional District — flips to blue, it would signal that Democrats are having an especially strong election night nationwide. If not, it suggests a limit to any blue wave.
- Several ballot measures would enshrine liberal policies on social issues in the state constitution, including on abortion and gay rights.
