Former congressman Tom Perriello (D) is running against one-term incumbent John McGuire (R) in this district, which is anchored in blue Charlottesville but is mostly rural and leans heavily Republican.
Flipping the 5th Congressional District was a stretch for Democrats heading into the campaign, but Perriello is from a prominent local family and is an experienced politician. He represented the district for a single term and lost the seat in 2010 after voting for the Affordable Care Act, which constituents opposed.
