Former federal prosecutor Harry Litman blasted the Trump Justice Department’s Election Day escalation against Democrats, comparing its reported wave of target letters to a “huge mob takedown.”
“Escalation is a really huge understatement,” Litman told All Rise News editor-in-chief Adam Klasfeld during an interview Tuesday.
The reaction came following New York Times reporting that roughly 20 Democratic officials were being sent target letters, including election attorney Marc Elias and a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee official.
“That’s like what would be reserved for a huge mob takedown,” Litman said
The Alaska investigation revolves around whether Democratic operatives recruited independent candidate Daniel J. Sullivan to confuse voters supporting Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, who faces Democrat Mary Peltola.
“A target letter for what?” Litman asked, calling the development a “five-alarm fire.”
“They’re going to have to come up with some novel theories,” he added. Litman went on to accuse the Trump DOJ of handing Republicans ammunition to challenge the election if Sullivan loses.
“I think [it] is just supposed to be a kind of talking point,” he said, arguing the administration wanted to promote the notion “that there’s something rotten all across the country.”
He also challenged the timing of the target letters while Alaskans were still voting.
“It’s dirty pool if they accelerate it in order to mess with the election,” Litman said as Americans continued to head to the polls.
The former federal prosecutor concluded Tuesday that he believed the timing was deliberate.
“But somebody somewhere, I have to believe, sat in DOJ and said, ‘Let’s send out this target letter notice today while the voting is still happening.’”
