President Donald Trump seemed to surprise himself Sunday while speaking with reporters after he uncorked an ad-lib that he claimed should be added to his rally speech.
Trump traveled to Iowa ahead of a planned rally to support Republicans like Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) in her midterm campaign. The president has traveled to several red states ahead of the midterm elections in hopes of building up support for the GOP, even though some Republicans have publicly distanced themselves from him because of his sinking approval rating.
Speaking with reporters on the tarmac in Dubuque, Iowa, Trump told reporters about his trade negotiations with Canada. At one point, Trump caught himself off guard with a comment he made and asked Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who was traveling with the president, to remind him to add it to his Iowa rally speech.
“One thing we didn’t talk about is the fact that our farmers were paying tremendous tariffs to send things to Canada. All those tariffs will be gone. There will be no tariffs. They were paying as much as 400% for milk products and other things. So part of the agreement is that our farmers will have to pay no tariffs,” Trump said.
“And I hope I remember to mention that in my speech today. I’m in the right place, being in Iowa. That’s a good thing,” he added, before turning to Burgum and asking, “Will you please remind me to mention it?”
Trump’s second administration has been a tough one for America’s farmers. The retaliatory tariffs that America’s trade partners imposed because of the Trump administration have made it more expensive for farmers to sell their products abroad. Trump’s war against Iran also caused fertilizer prices to spike, making it more expensive for farmers to keep growing crops.
