Olivia Rodrigo has big “expectations” for Amy Acton. She wants her to be Ohio’s next governor.
The pop phenom, who is touring her third album to a sold-out North American tour, used two stops in Columbus this week to show her support for Acton, a public health official and Ohio’s Democratic candidate for governor.
During Rodrigo’s performance of “stupid song” at the Schottenstein Center on Friday, Rodrigo came down from the stage and handed a bouquet of flowers to Acton, who was in the audience.
Rodrigo regularly hands a bouquet to a fan or a special guest in the crowd. Previous recipients have included the singers Halsey and Sienna Spiro.
During her first Columbus stop on Thursday, Rodrigo changed into an “Amy Acton for Governor” T-shirt for her encore.
The 23-year-old, a three-time Grammy winner, has emerged as a vocal advocate for abortion rights and women’s health. A music festival she organized this year in California raised $20 million for nonprofits focused on those issues.
Acton has drawn national attention in recent days after she was attacked by her GOP opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, in a campaign ad featuring Acton’s estranged mother.
Acton’s mother, Donna Arthur, lost custody of her two children nearly 50 years ago, after Arthur’s husband was indicted on a charge of raping Acton, then 12 years old. Acton and Arthur have not had contact since then.
