ATLANTA — Former vice president Kamala Harris spent the closing stretch of her midterms campaign blitz urging Georgia Democrats to turn out so many voters that the results would be “too big to rig.”
With her speech at the Fulton County Democratic Party’s annual fundraising dinner Friday night and several other Georgia appearances, Harris added to a week of high-profile political visits.
Harris and former president Barack Obama separately campaigned this week for Georgia Democrats, including Sen. Jon Ossoff, who is heavily favored to be reelected on Tuesday.
But her Georgia trip held higher stakes for Keisha Lance Bottoms, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee who could become the first Black woman governor — a point Harris, the first Black vice president, made at all of her stops in the state.
Bottoms, a former Atlanta mayor, said Friday that Harris had personally told her to “finish this campaign with joy.” Bottoms is facing Republican Rick Jackson, a billionaire health care executive who has unleashed negative ads against her during his largely self-funded campaign.
Harris reminded Democrats during her Friday remarks in Fulton County that President Donald Trump has fixated on the county to prove his baseless claims that he lost the 2020 election because of voter fraud. She accused the Trump administration of trying to cheat and the president of bribing voters in the run-up to the midterms.
Harris has also recently stumped for Senate candidates in Mississippi and New Hampshire. After a stop in Michigan in September, Harris hasn’t campaigned for other Democrats in toss-up Senate races, some of whom have said they don’t want her help.
Harris, who has said she is considering running for president again, returned to a refrain from her 2024 presidential campaign while closing her speech on Friday.
“We are fighters,” she said, “and when we fight, we win.”
