After losing the Democratic primary earlier this year to Abdul El-Sayed, Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) revealed Sunday that she had decided to endorse El-Sayed’s Republican opponent Mike Rogers, who is endorsed by President Donald Trump.
“I don’t know everything that’s gonna happen, and all I can do is lead with love and integrity,” Stevens told reporters outside of a church in Detroit. “I’m here with the person who I am voting for for United States Senate, and that is Mike Rogers.”
Stevens narrowly lost the August primary to El-Sayed and endorsed him afterward. But the bitter rivalry flared again last week after her fiancé, Jason Turkish, announced he would vote for Rogers, citing concerns about El-Sayed’s rhetoric on Israel. Stevens then demanded that El-Sayed condemn an outside group’s ad, and El-Sayed accused her of relitigating the primary.
The feud came to a head this weekend, when plans for Stevens to attend a Detroit church service alongside El-Sayed and Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) fell apart. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) said she asked Stevens not to attend.
Stevens instead appeared with Rogers at Detroit’s Perfecting Church on Sunday. Her endorsement followed shortly after.
