RICHMOND — A woman was shot Thursday outside the city offices of the Republican Party of Virginia, the state party said in a statement.
All RPV staff members are safe, and there are no indications that the shooting was related to the state GOP’s operations, the statement said.
The shooting happened directly in front of the RPV headquarters about 1:45 p.m., and first responders were on the scene in minutes, the statement said.
Surveillance footage obtained by The Washington Post shows a woman kneeling on the sidewalk in front of the building. A man gestures toward the building while another man runs out of view, the video shows. The man gesturing pulls out his cellphone and then brings the woman into the building. Someone off camera says, “He shot at her. Come on, come on, come on.”
RPV Chairman Jeff Ryer said people working with the Nature Conservancy, an environmental nonprofit, helped the woman. That organization often sets up a pop-up storefront on the block to promote its cause to the bustling lunch crowds that frequent nearby restaurants, Ryer said.
“They assisted the woman by bringing her inside our offices, where they put pressure on her wound to slow the bleeding,” said Ryer, who was not present but relayed an account from RPV employees.
Ryer said the woman appeared to have been shot in the shoulder and was taken to a hospital. RPV staffers were rattled by the episode and went home early, Ryer said.
Richmond police and Mayor Danny Avula’s office did not respond to requests for comment.
Vozzella reported from Richmond. Vazquez and Armus reported from Washington.
