Former Trump administration staffer Britt McHenry is breaking her silence about the NBA game blowup that cost her a State Department job.
In a video posted Wednesday to X, the former ESPN host said she threw her beer at a group of hecklers during last week’s Washington Wizards game only after one of them made a remark about her “getting gang raped outside.”
“I believe in sticking up for another woman, which is what I did,” McHenry wrote alongside the clip. “I could say a lot more, but I already lost my job for it.”
McHenry said she went to the game with her friend Andrew, who flew in from Los Angeles and bought the tickets. “We are not dating,” she noted.
She said the trouble started when a man seated in front of them, wearing what she called a “knockoff Patagonia vest,” began yelling at Milwaukee Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma, a former Wizards player, about his fiancée, model Winnie Harlow.
According to McHenry, the man shouted, “Kuzma, you suck because your girl’s hideous,” and mocked Harlow’s skin condition, vitiligo. “Just vile things,” McHenry said.
McHenry admitted she “probably shouldn’t have” fired back with a snarky comment suggesting the man’s own girlfriend was “really beautiful.” Another man in the row then turned around, told her to shut up using an expletive, and called her a “dumb b—-,” she said.
McHenry said she and Andrew retreated to the concourse, where an usher offered to move them. She said she refused because the tickets cost $250 to $300 apiece and the men were the ones misbehaving.
“In hindsight, I wish we would have left,” she said.
Once they returned, McHenry said the men began throwing drinks at her before one made the gang rape remark. She said she then threw the rest of her beer in their direction and turned to leave as the group pelted her and Andrew with towels and drinks. The main agitator was ejected, she added.
McHenry, who had recently been hired as a State Department press advisor, was forced to resign after the video of the drink toss surfaced. She said she was standing up for Harlow, “a woman that I admire and many women and young girls look up to,” as well as herself.
