Nickelback has been a household name for decades now, but according to the band that comes with a lot of baggage. Especially for frontman Chad Kroeger, who admitted in a recent interview that being “the face of the band” has its own unique hurdles.
Speaking with Virgin Radio UK in October 2026, each Nickelback member was asked what fame means to them. How do they feel about being one of the most commercially successful, and possibly most memed, alt-rock bands of the 2000s? That’s where Kroeger explained his situation in comparison to his bandmates.
“I don’t get to turn it off as much as these [other] guys do,” he said, in reference to the other three members of Nickelback. “They get the anonymity a little bit more than I do. I’m the face of the band, and so it’s a little tough for me to hide.”
He then told a story that would probably sound all-too familiar to many celebrities. But especially for musicians, there seems to be a certain type of interaction that happens when they go out in public.
Chad Kroeger’s Frontman Status Allows His Nickelback Bandmates to Enjoy More Anonymity in Public
As the face of Nickelback, Chad Kroeger admitted that it’s difficult for him to blend into the background when he’s out and about. He described an attempt to go to a store like a normal person, only to be recognized by an employee. According to Kroeger, however, some interactions are easier than others.
“The other day I was in a store doing something … and I had a hat on. I didn’t think that I looked like me,” Kroeger began. He then briefly summarized the conversation he had in the store. “‘Can I try these on?’ And [the person helping me was], like, ‘Yeah, let me get you a key to the dressing room. Any tour dates coming up?’” he said, laughing.
“Just, like, ‘Yeah. 2027.’ ‘Cause even I try to forget sometimes,” Kroeger added. “I just think, ‘Well, they don’t know who I am. There’s no way this person knows.’ And some people just play it cooler than others. And some people just are just, like … ‘I know who you are and I need to tell you. When I was such and such an age, I came and saw you guys play at this city.’”
He continued, “It’s a double-edged sword. It can be a lot of fun. You’re not having a hard time getting a table at a restaurant. And sometimes it’s a bit of a pain in the ass.”
Guitarist Ryan Peake added that Chad Kroeger’s role as frontman acts as a protective shied for the other members. In a way, they can “disappear and go off-grid” easier, said Peake.
“Like Chad was saying, he kind of takes the bullets for all of us because being the frontman, recognizable guy, it’s a day-to-day job, for sure,” Peake agreed. “And lately it’s been hopefully quite good to him.”
