Brent Robertson, chief of staff to Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall, didn’t report a business arrangement with a lobbying executive or any income from the sale of a house the venture owned, Politico reported.
Two congressional ethics experts told the outlet that this omission was likely against Senate rules.
In 2023, Robertson set up BXR Holdings LLC with Ryan Lindsey, a government relations executive at CRH Americas, with both named as managers on the Texas formation paperwork. The company purchased a Washington townhouse that year for $1.85 million and sold it in October 2024 for $2,195,000, netting $345,000.
According to Politico, Robertson never listed his role at the LLC on his annual financial disclosures and left the sale income off his 2025 filing. Senate rules call for reporting transactions above $1,000 and LLC positions, except for passive investors. The Ethics Committee typically requests corrections without penalties.
Robertson’s lawyer, Charlie Spies, said he’s complying with the rules and was only a minority investor with no operating authority, calling the manager title “ministerial.” Lindsey has given to Marshall’s campaign and declined comment.
Stan Brand, a former House general counsel, said on its face it appears a required disclosure and that the passive-investor argument conflicts with the paperwork. Kedric Payne of the Campaign Legal Center agreed.
“This clearly raises red flags,” Payne said.
Marshall has been fighting an unexpectedly close contest against Democratic pastor Adam Hamilton, amid a number of damaging stories about his past, including that he financially targeted low-income patients of his medical practice with lawsuits and arrests over small unpaid medical bills.
