‘Porn isn’t the problem’: Adult star says dating apps and social media are fuelling Gen Z’s ‘sex recession’

Gen Z is officially stuck in a “sex recession”— but adult star Alix Lynx insists porn isn’t to blame for young people checking out of the bedroom, despite the notion that porn ruins sex lives.

After a study from the Kinsey Institute revealed that young adults are reporting record-low levels of sexual activity, despite wanting intimacy, the 37-year-old performer weighed in on what is really driving the drought.

Her verdict is that social media and dating apps are the primary culprits, as an obsession with instant gratificationis actively killing real-world romance.

“Honestly, I think porn is the least of it,” the 37-year-old said. “Porn has always existed. I think social media and dating apps are much bigger factors.”

Lynx says that social platforms encourage Gen Zers to stay home instead of putting themselves out there in real life, making it impossible to find a sexual partner. The ability to swipe through endless profiles and send messages offers instant sexual validation, allowing people to talk to prospective sexual partners without ever stepping outside.

Lynx warns that relying on digital channels stops people from expanding their horizons and having real sexual experiences, leading them to view life entirely through the lens of a screen.

The former corporate worker ditched the 9-to-5 grind in 2014 to enter the adult entertainment business. While she doesn’t think porn is the main driver behind Gen Z’s intimacy troubles, she acknowledges that it is not completely faultless either.

Unrealistic adult scenes can distort real-world expectations and create awkward bedroom encounters.

“I’ve hooked up with guys in the past who pulled moves on me that I know they saw in my scenes,” she revealed. “I’m sitting there thinking, ‘That’s something I do when I’m performing, not in real life.’ It creates a major disconnect because porn is performance art, not a blueprint for intimacy.”

Beyond expectations in the bedroom, Lynx argues that dating apps have created the illusion of an endless buffet of prospective partners, discouraging singles from settling down as they constantly search for a better match.

Instead of meeting someone for dinner, singles get hooked on the thrill of the hunt.

“Dating apps give you this endless supply of people,” Lynx said. “You can scroll and scroll, match and match, and that alone becomes a dopamine hit.”

“Instead of thinking, ‘I matched with this person, I like them, let’s meet in real life,’ people become pen pals,” she added. “Then they swipe again to see what’s next because there could always be someone better.”

Lynx warns that the exact same consumer mindset plagues social media feeds.

“You can find someone hot, slide into their DMs and start talking, but then another hot person appears and suddenly your attention is somewhere else,” she said. “We’re in this era where everyone is constantly asking, ‘What’s next? What’s the next best thing?’ You could spend your entire life searching for what’s next.”

This constant digital distraction is also eroding social skills, making in-person flirting feel daunting. Lynx said people get too comfortable interacting through screens and face-to-face communication becomes a case of “use it or lose it.”

Even porn-watchers are reportedly craving genuine emotional connection over quick thrills, according to data searches.

OnlyFans search platform OnlySearch logged 7.3 million searches in 2026, with “couple” and “wife” both cracking the top 20 search terms. Content creators branding themselves as the “girlfriend experience” or “girl next door” also drew higher click-through rates, proving users are looking for connection in their content.

In her own work, Lynx sees firsthand how digital interactions can sabotage real-life relationships. Men often text her from their work desks instead of engaging with their partners. Instead of building anticipation and connection with their spouse, they’re looking for a fleeting rush of instant gratification.

Ultimately, Lynx says a generation accustomed to getting everything on demand is missing out on the one thing screens can’t deliver: authentic human connection.
