‘Sorry to interrupt’: ‘Belligerent’ MS NOW host cuts off Dem for downplaying Trump threat

MS NOW host Jonathan Capehart wasn’t satisfied with a Democratic congressman’s assurances that President Donald Trump can’t steal the midterms. He cut him off on air to tell him so.

Rep. Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.), the top Democrat on the House Administration Committee, which oversees federal elections, appeared on “The Weekend” on Saturday. Capehart pointed to a Washington Post report that current and former officials have been privately advising states worried about Trump interfering in the election.

“Congressman Morelle, what happens if or dare say, when President Trump and his personal law firm that is now the Department of Justice ignores the courts? What do you do then?” Capehart asked.

Morelle said the Constitution gives Congress the final say over contested House and Senate elections. Trump “would have to inject himself in ways that no one has ever seen,” he added.

Capehart broke in.

“Congressman, I’m sorry to interrupt you. We are seeing the president inject himself in ways we’ve never seen right now,” Capehart said. “Forgive me for interrupting you and being quasi belligerent, but we’re talking about a president who couldn’t care less what the courts tell him that he can do or can’t do.”

He pointed to the trees cut down at East Potomac Golf Links and the ballroom going up where the East Wing once stood.

“With ten days out before this very consequential election, why shouldn’t I be belligerent about the idea that the president of the United States, who has a very deep and personal worry about you and your party taking the gavel in the majority and investigating the hell out of him and his family, that he won’t do everything in his personal power to stop you?” Capehart asked.

Morelle held his ground. He said Trump controls the White House grounds but has no role in running elections.

“In order for him to steal an election, he’d have to persuade an awful lot of law-abiding citizens to literally change votes, even though they’re being watched and observed by Democrats and Republicans alike,” Morelle said.

He pointed to record early turnout and said voters, Congress and the courts “won’t be deterred.” He did acknowledge a worst-case scenario.

“If what you’re asking is effectively, will he call out the military in the United States Army to prevent the House from convening? I mean, then we’re in places where, I mean, that is essentially a coup,” he said. “The last group that’s going to allow that in the United States, the American people.”

Another host wasn’t convinced.

“I appreciate your optimism, congressman,” he said.
