Republicans panic as young men undergo remarkable vibe shift against Trump: report

The young men who helped carry Donald Trump back to the White House are turning on him, and even Republicans admit it, according to a new report.

CNN reported that nearly twice as many men under 30 now say they’re more likely to vote for a Democrat than a Republican in November, according to a recent Pew Research poll of registered voters, which represents a stunning reversal from 2024, when young men split roughly evenly.

“Kids are demoralized on our side,” a Republican operative close to the White House told CNN. “There’s no point in hiding the ugly truth.”

CNN interviewed two dozen young men around Lansing, Michigan, and nearly all described mounting anxiety about the cost of living and fears that the American dream is slipping away.

Zach Larson, a 21-year-old Michigan State senior, voted for Trump in 2024 and once called himself “hard-right.” Now he calls the president a “tyrant” and says he’s likely to back Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s closely watched Senate race.

“Seeing the economy in this state, it’s very hard to be a conservative,” Larson said, “and I wouldn’t call myself that anymore.”

Caleb Christie, a 19-year-old construction management major, said Trump’s win once offered hope that a stable career, a home and a family were within reach.

“That’s shifted over his presidency, where we’re not seeing those things come to fruition,” Christie said.

Andrew Jubeck, 19, of Lansing Community College, said he was afraid to pursue his passions for botany and biology. “If we do what we want,” he said, “how are we going to be able to afford to live?”

The median age of a first-time homebuyer has jumped to 40, and fewer young people are working than when Trump took office.

Some students are making dramatic backup plans. Joseph Burke, a 21-year-old data science and biochemistry major, is weighing the priesthood because of AI and housing costs.

“I’m kind of just looking for something that has secure options,” he said.

Matthew Holland, 18, fears AI will wipe out the web design career he envisioned and doesn’t trust the administration to help. “They are doing as much as they can to rack in profits using AI,” he said, “and trading out labor in favor of AI.”

Even Anton Gegaj, president of the Michigan State College Republicans, conceded Trump lost many of his peers. “It really was just the Iran war,” he said.

Not everyone has given up on Trump. “No president was universally liked,” said George Hoppe, a 19-year-old business major. “It’s a hard job. He’s doing what he’s got to do.”

But GOP Senate nominee Mike Rogers sounded uneasy about Democrats’ campus gains.

“Unfortunately, they are doing a good job on campuses,” Rogers said. “It’s a little scary, but we’re working on it.”
