President Donald Trump’s latest Iowa rally took a bizarre turn when a single sentence dissolved into a sound that left critics reeling.
Trump was addressing supporters in Iowa on Thursday and warning them about the battle for control of the Senate when his words suddenly gave way.
“If you don’t want communists controlling the U.S. Senate, which is between JAIIIIIIT,” he said, widening his eyes and stretching the last word into something closer to a yelp than a word, according to a clip posted to X by journalist Aaron Rupar.
The moment ricocheted across social media within the hour, with several of the president’s critics pointing to it as the latest sign of his slipping faculties.
Journalist Laura Bassett said the episodes are no longer rare. “The uncontrolled noises are happening more often,” she observed. “It is wild to watch him mentally deteriorate on stage in real time.”
Sarah Matthews, who served as a deputy press secretary in Trump’s first-term White House before breaking with him, reached a similar conclusion. “Another uncontrolled noise,” she remarked. “Seems like we’re watching his cognitive decline in real time.”
Democratic strategist Keith Edwards was blunter. “Holy s— his brain is actually fried,” he reacted.
Canadian broadcaster Dean Blundell called it “another weird dementia belch,” adding, “He’s dying.”
Tom Nichols, a staff writer at The Atlantic and a former Naval War College professor, needed only one word to sum up his reaction. “What,” he replied.
Political commentator Julian Andreone mocked the moment with a sarcastic reply. “Yes sir yes sir that’s it,” he quipped.
The clip is the latest in a string of public moments that have fueled questions about Trump’s health and stamina as he barnstorms for Republicans ahead of next month’s midterm elections.
Trump, who turned 80 in June, has repeatedly brushed off those concerns, boasting about acing cognitive tests and insisting his health is excellent.
