Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday night that the Iranian regime must be overthrown once and for all.
Speaking to an Israel Defense Forces officer graduation ceremony, Netanyahu said that Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei “decided to follow in his father’s footsteps” and attempt “once again to develop the bombs of death.”
“And therefore, there is only one way to remove this threat once and for all: overthrow the regime in Iran,” Netanyahu said. “And that is my directive to the IDF, the Mossad, and the security branches.”
So long as the Iranian regime remains standing, Netanyahu said, Israel faces an “existential threat.”
Netanyahu added that President Donald Trump had said a few days ago that the United States was “ready to finish the job” and would only do so with the help of Israel.
Trump has publicly said there will be no attacks ahead of the midterms.
Netanyahu’s remarks come days ahead of Tuesday’s fiercely contested Israeli elections, which will be a referendum on Netanyahu following the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre and the brutal military campaign in the Gaza Strip that followed.
As Israelis prepare to head to the polls, Netanyahu has grown increasingly bullish in his comments about Iran.
Earlier this week, Netanyahu met with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at Ovda Air Base in southern Israel, according to Netanyahu’s international spokesman Doron Spielman.
“They discussed the partnership, both offensively and defensively, regarding the threats in the Middle East,” Spielman said, declining to elaborate.
