Disgust after voter spouts ‘bone-chilling’ panic over candidate’s name: ‘Embarrassing’

A young voter’s on-camera concern about a Democratic Senate nominee left political observers stunned as a short clip ricocheted across social media.

On Thursday, journalist Richard Gaisford shared a roughly 30-second exchange with a 19-year-old voter in Detroit who was worried about the name of Abdul El-Sayed, the Democrat running for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat.

“He doesn’t even say his real name,” the teenager said. “Like, why can’t you share your real name?”

The interviewer pushed back, asking, “What is his real name? His real name is Doctor Abdul El-Sayed.”

“You didn’t see where he said it’s Mohammed?” the teenager asked. “It’s Abdul Mohammed El-Sayed.”

The interviewer then asked for the middle name of El-Sayed’s Republican opponent, Mike Rogers. “Mohammed’s not his middle name,” she responded.

Gaisford tagged Al Jazeera English and billed the conversation as “illuminating.” Much of the response that followed zeroed in not on the young voter herself but on the political climate critics said shaped her concerns.

Niall Stanage, a columnist for The Hill, remarked that it was “indeed quite an exchange in just 30 seconds.” Former Hillary Clinton campaign spokesperson Zara Rahim called it “actually bone chilling,” while progressive political analyst and writer Molly Jong-Fast responded with a bewildered “Huh?”

Journalist Zaid Jilani tied the moment to the attacks Barack Obama faced over his middle name. “All these ideological debates in the Democratic Party and the GOP is still stuck on Barack HUSSEIN Obama,” he quipped.

Liberal influencer Harry Sisson aimed his fire at Republicans, arguing that MAGA has “nothing to campaign on” and is now “worried about Abdul El Sayed’s name.” “Embarrassing,” he added.

Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, whose campaign appearances with El-Sayed have become a recurring flashpoint in the race, chimed in with a five-word take. “Racism is low IQ cope,” he said. El-Sayed has put distance between himself and Piker, telling Semafor he has “no plans” to campaign with him.
