Elon Musk fired off an ominous warning Wednesday at veteran tech journalist Kara Swisher after she suggested the billionaire could face renewed federal investigations — and potentially prison time — if Democrats regain power.
“Live by the sword, die by the sword,” Musk wrote on his X platform. “Sounds like Swisher really wants to go to prison.”
The fiery response came two days after Swisher, a podcast host who has extensively covered Musk, discussed his potential legal troubles during an appearance on The Bulwark’s “Receipts with Catherine Rampell” podcast.
“Under Kamala Harris, he might be in jail right now,” Swisher said, arguing that federal authorities had been investigating several of Musk’s companies.
She suggested the political landscape could shift drastically if Republicans lose control of Congress in November.
“If Donald Trump loses the House and the Senate, I would worry. I’d be worried if I were him, you know, no matter how rich he is,” Swisher said.
She claimed Musk had benefited from the Trump administration’s relaxed federal oversight and halting of investigations into his businesses.
“So they’re going to start investigating again,” Swisher predicted. “You think he’s not on the list? He’s at the top of that list.”
Musk’s social media response Wednesday quickly drew attention.
“Elon is losing it on his platform right now. This is the interview that has set him off,” The Bulwark’s Sam Stein wrote on X with a link to the podcast.
“Interestingly, the only time Musk ever attacked me personally is when I suggested he should be investigated for any crimes he may have committed by a Democratic Congress,” journalist Mehdi Hasan wrote. “Now Kara Swisher has done the same, and he’s lost it again. Wonder why it’s such a sore spot for him.”
