President Donald Trump claimed Tuesday that he will have spent more than $400 million to bolster Republicans by Election Day, as he tries to stave off a Democratic wave that could cost his party control of Congress.
“Because of my belief in the Republican Party, and all of our Policies and Principles, and especially after witnessing what is taking place in France, and other locations throughout Europe, I am pleased to announce that, having to do with the Most Important Midterm Elections in our Country’s History, I have spent, or will be spending, over 400 Million Dollars by Election Day,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
“More than 300 Million Dollars has already been spent on Advertising, Direct and Indirect Voter Contact, Rallies, Rally Arenas, Telerallies, Get Out the Vote Programs, Election Integrity, and more. It is my Great Honor to do so on behalf of the Republican Party, which has done so much to bring our Country back from the Edge of Oblivion.”
Trump’s claim to have already spent more than $300 million is unverified. Public records show MAGA Inc., the president’s super PAC, has spent about $200 million so far, Reuters reported Saturday, though Trump did not specify which of his political groups his figures cover. Another report published by The Washington Post earlier this month found that Trump’s super PACs had reserved more than $194 million in advertising, citing the media tracker AdImpact.
Trump had previously said he would spend $400 million to $500 million on the midterms and save some for 2028, the Post noted. The paper also found that roughly half a billion dollars in Republican spending on key House and Senate races since Labor Day had failed to shift the polls in the GOP’s favor.
Trump has long touted the massive $400 million war chest his super PACs have amassed over the years, though as of July, the money had gone largely unspent.
