President Donald Trump faced a blistering rebuke from a fellow Republican on Monday, with outgoing Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) accusing him of siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin — and declaring that his influence in Congress has collapsed.
The criticism came during a CNN interview with Jake Tapper, following what correspondent Nick Paton Walsh described as a “startling” display of support for Russia from the White House.
Bacon, a retired Air Force brigadier general, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had told lawmakers that Ukraine was facing restrictions on intelligence sharing and delays in receiving critical American military assistance.
“This is absolutely disgraceful coming from our president, and as a Republican, I’m embarrassed about it,” Bacon said.
The Nebraska Republican went on to accuse Trump of abandoning Ukraine while overlooking Russia’s continued attacks on civilians.
“Our president’s morally blind on this war,” Bacon said. “He’s pitched his lot in with the dictator and the war criminal.”
Bacon, who is not seeking reelection, also suggested Trump’s actions could have consequences for his legislative agenda.
“The president’s leverage in this Congress is shot,” he said, questioning why Republicans should support Trump’s proposed Victory Arch or White House ballroom.
Asked directly whether Trump had committed treason, Bacon stopped short of making that accusation — but still delivered harsh words for the MAGA leader.
“The president, I do believe, is aiding and abetting Putin,” Bacon said. “And he’s undermining Ukraine. Do I call that treason? No, I don’t know his motives, but he’s dead wrong.”
“And he’s hurting the credibility of this country.”
