A series of new polls shows that President Donald Trump’s historically low approval rating has not only put him in bad standing with his own party, but also exposed his “main vulnerability” as the midterms approach, according to a new report.
Axios reported Sunday that three new polls conducted by Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos, NBC News and Fox News all revealed that Trump’s “main vulnerability” is the economy, an issue that propelled him to the White House in 2024. The polls were released at a time when the cost of living has continued to rise for millions of Americans.
“Once a strength, the economy is now Trump’s main vulnerability. Just 21% approve of his handling of the cost of living in the Post poll, 27% in NBC’s and 22% approve of his handling of inflation in Fox’s,” the report reads in part.
At the same time, the polls revealed that more Republicans are starting to abandon Trump ahead of the midterms.
“Even Republicans are souring: Fox and NBC both find Trump’s approval among Republicans at 76%, while the Post puts it at 79%,” according to the report.
Brittany Martinez, Principles First executive director and Republican political strategist, told Axios that the polls seem to back up recent critiques Republicans have lobbed at the president’s policies.
For instance, the report notes that Rep. Maria Zalazar (R-FL) ran an ad that implicitly bashed Trump’s immigration policies, and there are multiple Republican candidates who have removed mentions of Trump from their campaign materials.
“Distancing yourself in general, that isn’t anything new,” Martinez said, adding that the growing distance between Trump and Republicans “speaks volumes.”
