MS NOW host Jonathan Capehart was in the middle of criticizing Vice President JD Vance’s answer to a grieving military widower on Sunday when his co-host cut in with a correction. He took the remark back on the spot.
The panel on “The Weekend” was discussing Vance’s appearance at a CBS News town hall on Saturday. Joey Amor asked him there about the death of his wife, Master Sgt. Nicole Amor. She was one of six U.S. service members killed March 1 in an Iranian strike in Kuwait.
“There was a failure in the leadership,” Amor told Vance. “And I want to know how this administration is going to start holding those leaders accountable.”
Vance said it was “literally the first time I’ve heard of this” and that he wanted “to fix that stuff.”
The show played a clip of the exchange, and the panel didn’t like it. One host called it “an objectively bad answer” and said “I’ve never heard of it” and “we’re going to fix it” weren’t “the way to address that concern and that question and that tragedy.”
Capehart went further.
“In listening to that answer, and I recognize we only showed a clip of it. I have not seen the entire answer, but at least in what we saw, there was a there is a lack of humanity in that response,” he said. “This man lost his wife. Other families have lost loved ones, and—.”
That’s when co-host Jackie Alemany jumped in to set the Vance record straight.
“And he did, I will say at the beginning of it he said, I’m so sorry for your loss,” she said. “Well, we cut it down because it was a really long answer.”
Capehart backed down right away.
“Okay. Well that’s right. Thank you for pointing that out,” he said to Alemany. “I would withdraw the statement, counselor.”
He then moved on to Vance’s comments on immigration: “Here’s another instance where I’m like, come on, man.”
Earlier in the segment, the panel noted that the White House had chosen to send Vance onto a major network stage just 16 days before the midterms. One host said Vance had “picked up some of Marco Rubio’s skill set” for defending Trump’s policies “in more palatable ways,” but that he “did, I think, struggle a little bit more than usual last night.”
