President Donald Trump took his midterm push to deep-red Northern Kentucky on Saturday. Video from inside the arena showed plenty of empty seats.
Nandita Bose, a White House correspondent for Reuters, posted footage from the rally in Highland Heights, just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. It showed large sections of empty seating, with much of the upper level bare.
“President Trump’s crowd on a Saturday afternoon in Highland Heights, Kentucky – just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, in solidly Republican Northern Kentucky – where he has yet to fill the arena,” Bose wrote.
The clip spread quickly, and critics piled on.
“Trump’s Kentucky rally and the entire upper deck is EMPTY,” wrote author and commentator Brittany Belle. “MAGA’s expiration date is showing.”
Media strategist Vince D. Monroy shared another clip from the rally and wrote, “The entire upper deck is empty.”
Writer and podcast host Molly Jong-Fast went for a movie reference: “Isn’t Sunset boulevard one of trumps favorite movies?”
Not everyone blamed Trump alone. Robert Lusetich, a journalist and former Fox Sports golf writer, pointed to the college football schedule.
“Low energy. Ohio State and Cincinnati football both playing,” he wrote.
The rally is part of a busy stretch of campaign stops for Trump as Republicans try to hold onto Congress. Reuters reported Saturday that Trump has been blaming his aides for the party’s faltering midterm strategy.
