In “You Can See Everything,” the much-talked-about new documentary, Billy Evans appears to be a busy man. He hustles here and there with seemingly much to do.
But what exactly Evans is doing at any given time remains a mystery, despite the remarkable access he and his romantic partner, Elizabeth Holmes, granted the filmmakers, Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, who spent three years on what would become a roughly three-hour movie.
Fielder moved into the couple’s home for the month or so before Holmes, the disgraced founder of Theranos, reported to prison in May 2023 to begin her sentence for defrauding investors about the company’s blood-testing technology.
Evans’s behavior in the movie echoes what the journalist Amy Chozick experienced when she spent time with the couple in 2023. “I asked what he does,” Chozick recounted in her New York Times article, which is cited in the film. “‘A lot of different stuff, investing, starting companies,’ he replied without elaborating.”
We now know that one of those companies is Haemanthus, a blood-testing start-up that describes itself as “a radically new approach to health testing,” according to marketing materials reviewed by The Times in 2025.
Here’s what else we know about Evans’s past and present:
His family founded Evans Hotels, a San Diego-based chain that operates three luxury properties in Southern California. The chain’s website describes its business as “family-owned” since 1953, but the company made clear in a statement issued Oct. 1 that Billy Evans is not involved in the business in any way, as an employee or shareholder. Nonetheless, San Diego has long been a home for him, and where the documentary was largely filmed, but his LinkedIn page has Austin, Texas, listed as his location. Holmes has been serving her sentence at F.P.C. Bryan, a minimum-security federal prison, which is about 90 minutes from Houston.
According to his LinkedIn, Evans graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2015 with a degree in economics. He also lists himself as the chief executive of Haemanthus from October 2022 to the present.
Evans, 34, and Holmes, 42, met in 2017 at a party during Fleet Week in San Francisco. “To say we immediately fell in love isn’t an overstatement,” Evans told Chozick. At the time, Holmes was under federal investigation.
Before The Wall Street Journal published an investigation into Theranos in 2015, leading to Holmes’s downfall, she was named the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire by Forbes. In the documentary, Evans tells Fielder that when he met Holmes, he wasn’t aware of her background.
In 2018, Holmes and Evans got engaged, reportedly at a Taylor Swift concert, and went to the Burning Man festival, where she burned a tribute to Theranos. In 2019, after a date was set for Holmes’s criminal trial, she and Evans spent six months traveling the country in an R.V.
“Maybe we’ll get married someday, but our bond is more than a piece of paper,” she told People in 2025 from prison.
Holmes and Evans also have two children together: William, who was born in 2021, just before her trial; and Invicta, who was born in 2023, shortly before she reported to prison.
Evans did not respond to a request for comment on Friday.
