Man Fatally Shot in Midtown Manhattan Subway Station

A man was shot and killed on the platform of a subway station in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday afternoon, according to the police.

The man, who has not been publicly identified by the authorities, was standing on a northbound platform in the 7th Avenue Station on 53rd Street, where the B, D and E trains run, not long after noon, the police said.

According to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the matter, the man then got into a dispute with another man on the platform. It was not immediately clear what had sparked their fight or whether the men had been physical with each other, but the argument soon escalated. The second man then drew a gun and shot the first man once in the chest, the police said.

Officers were alerted to the episode just before 12:30 p.m.

The injured man, who the police said was in his 30s, was taken by emergency medical workers to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead by hospital staff, according to the police. The police have not made any arrests connected to the shooting.

The spasm of violence drew a swarm of patrol cars and ambulances to the heart of Manhattan on Saturday, according to videos posted on social media, interrupting a gloomy October day. By 3 p.m., service on the C, D and E trains in Manhattan was disrupted in both directions, the M.T.A. said, scrambling weekend travel as officers responded to the shooting.

Major crime in the city’s transit system has risen slightly so far this year compared to last year, though offenses on the subway have been trending down after a period of turmoil following the Covid pandemic.

As of Oct. 11, there have been 1,697 crimes in the transit system since the start of the year, 27 more than the same period in 2025, according to the Police Department. Felony assaults, including those against police officers and M.T.A. employees, and thefts have driven crime up, the police said. Officers have made 51 gun arrests in the system this year, the highest number since they began recording such data.

Still, this year remains the second safest in the transit system in 15 years, not including the pandemic years when ridership was especially low.
